Dealing With “Unproductive” Stress

When we’re stressed with the “unproductive” type of

stress that I spoke about last week, it is difficult to

think clearly, and it may in some cases be paralyzing.

The first step to being able to deal with stress, and

to alter your relationship with it, is to become aware

of what is happening, and then consciously choose

to make another choice in that moment. I can practically guarantee you it won’t be easy. Your

unconscious mind works very hard at trying to keep

you in a familiar place - even when it doesn’t seem

to work for you.

However, I can also practically guarantee with a

willingness to alter your behavior around your stress

in a consistent manner you will likely find it getting

easier over time.

I promised you some ways to help relieve stress this

week…and here are 3 different types of things that

can help relatively easily and quickly.

1. Your breathing. You may notice that when you

are stressed, you don’t breathe easily or deeply. To

take a moment, and focus on your breathing is one

of the simplest ways to help yourself in a moment of

stress. Breathe in twice as slowly as you breathe

out (such as breathe in to the count of 3, out to the

count of 6). Do it a few times, and you will have a

noticeable difference. Your body won’t be able to

do anything but relax.

2. Focus. Where is your focus at the moment

that you are stressed? Is it on a concern? Is it on

a possible outcome? By allowing yourself to

focus on the moment, you will likely find that much

of the stress you are feeling of the unproductive

type will be minimalized, and quite possibly even

disappear. Most of this type of stress comes from

feelings from past events, or fears about the future.

3. What can you do? Sometimes it is difficult to know

what to do when you are feeling stuck, which can

lead to stress. There is always something that you

can do. It may not be what you want to do, but there

is always something you can do. When feeling stuck

doing anything will be helpful, and doing something

out of the ordinary may even be more beneficial

because it helps to break any patterns you may have

settled into, and might provide some much needed

perspective.

Productive Stress vs. Non-Productive Stress

There is what I would call a “productive” type of stress,

which is the kind of stress that helps you get things

done, and helps you in times of emergency, and then

there is the not so productive type of stress.

“Productive” stress is something that is more for the

moment, for the event. It’s the type of stress that

is meaningful to our lives, and sometimes helps

with our survival. The other type, which I call

“non-productive stress” is a feeling likely to be

more enduring, continual, and doesn’t serve the

same purpose as “productive” stress. This is the kind

of stress we can most certainly live without, and is

also the type we have the most control over.

Odds are if you are unemployed and looking for a job

for any length of time you are more likely to be experiencing

the prolonged version of stress which (it has been

speculated) can affect, among other things, your

immune system which, is of course, the last thing we

need with H1N1 going round.

Interestingly, as human beings we get comfortable

in what is familiar, so as stressed as you might feel,

the longer you are there, the more likely you are to

unconsciously consider this feeling a ”friend,” and

the more difficult it might be consciously to shake,

or want to take efforts to shake it.

The good news is that when you can recognize what

is happening, you are taking the first step to be able

to change things. However, it is only a step. How

many people know how to lose weight, and don’t?

If knowing something consciously was the only

thing we ever needed, we likely wouldn’t procrastinate,

or eat foods that weren’t good for us, or do behaviors

that were considered unhealthy and harmful to us.

Next week (unless there is as question that someone

would like answered) I will discuss some ways that

you can handle the stress that you are feeling, ways

that you can take that “next step.”

Resume Checklist

Here are a few good things to be aware of on your resume. Use this checklist to ensure that your resume is complete:

One page only, unless you have significant previous experience
Word processor generated, with full spell check (automated and manual) and proofing
Times Roman or other Serif font, 10 point to 12 point size (12 point is best)
No more than two fonts or two sizes
Margins no less than 1″ and no more than 1.5″
Quality bond paper, 8½ ” x 11″
Contact information clearly stated; campus and permanent addresses both listed if appropriate
Clear, focused objective
Summary of your top three or four accomplishments, skills or competencies listed as bullet points
Degree listed first, college/university second
GPA listed if over 3.0
Major GPA listed if over 3.0 and your overall GPA is under 3.0
Graduation date listed, even if you have not yet graduated
Experience section listing notable accomplishments
Descriptive (not actual) job titles
Industry buzzwords and keywords included
Activities section listing your most notable extracurricular activities
No personal data or potentially discriminatory data
Spell-check and grammar-check your resumetwice; then have at least two other people do it for you again.

Stress Relief for Job Seekers on Fridays

Anyone who has been unemployed for any period of time know how stressful it can be. It can be even more difficult if we have a spouse or partner who depends on us and they are stressing out as a result of our circumstances. For many of us there isn’t really anyone we can talk to regarding our stress and many of us may be without medical benefits during this transition so trying to get in to see a medical professional is not an option.

I met someone through @thejobsguy last week who struck me as a person with great knowledge in the stress relive area. Elizabeth Alraune consults with people as a life coach helping them focus on doing what needs to be done whether they feel like it or not. She suggested to me that many of the people who follow @thejobsguy could probably use her services, to which I replied while I couldn’t agree with her more, I wasn’t sure how many unemployed people could actually afford her service or one like it. That is when Elizabeth suggested that she offer up some of her expertise for free on a weekly basis by answering question/s on @thejobsguy blog on the topic of stress created by job search and being without a job. Every Fridays at noon she will post an answer to a readers question or questions so that other who may be suffering from the same issues can also pick up some new ideas about how to deal with them.
